On his recent tour to Punjab with an aim to woo dalit vote bank, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo has been visiting all the prominent ‘deras’ of the state. Enjoying a vast follower base, many of the political leaders try to milk the huge vote bank with the help of ‘deras’.

A politician visiting the ‘dera’ is nothing new but they only pay obeisance at the ‘dera’ or have brief chat with sect head but Arvind Kejriwal being the master manipulator managed to address the congregation inside ‘Dera Sachkhand Ballan’ at Jullandhar district.

Appropriates Dalit legacy of Kanshi Ram

Eyeing dalit vote bank in Punjab, Arvind Kejriwal sought to appropriate the legacy of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram with a visit to his birthplace in Rupnagar. In neighboring SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), BSP supremo Mayawati appeared around two hours later at a rally held to mark Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary.

It also took personal turns as Kejriwal addressed his host, Kanshi Ram’s sister Swaran Kaur, as ‘bhua’ (father’s sister). It must be noted that a ‘tug of war’ took place between Mayawati and Kejriwal to catch hold of Kanshi Ram’s sister. Kejriwal managed to have her on his side on the official function held to mark the birth anniversary of Kanshi Ram at Rupnagar.

Ahead of assembly polls, Kejriwal is going all out garner sympathy of dalit voters. From making inroads into ‘Dera’ to hijacking Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary celebration, he has left no stone unturned to influence dalits in Punjab.
